The following optimizations should only be considered if you really need the performance. At a render resolution of 80%, my framerate on average went from 28 FPS to 48 FPS, a ~71% improvement to performance, and at a render resolution of 70%, it went from 35 FPS to 55 FPS, a ~57% improvement to performance. This continues as render resolution goes down. On an RX 6900 XT, rendering at 4k with all settings at Ultra and only Ray Traced Reflections enabled, my framerate on average went from 20 FPS to 35 FPS, which is a ~75% improvement to performance. The benefits from applying these commands will vary from scene to scene, as well as between hardware configurations.

Then you hook into the game process and configure a hotkey for toggling the console at runtime. If you want to play around with these settings dynamically, you have to use the Universal Unreal Engine 4 Unlocker.

R. 0.2 How to add these optimizations to the game without console commandsġ) Go to the folder %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\TheAscent\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditorģ) Add the following lines to the bottom of the file (or add the lines to any existing header if such a header exists): Setting this to a value of 0.2 results in a good balance between performance and visuals, while preserving the mirror-like reflection qualities that ray tracing can provide. The lower this value is, the more frequently it will fall back to other raster methods for rendering reflections. The default roughness threshold in The Ascent is 0.45, but lowering this setting will offer substantial performance gains. R. 1 The maximum surface roughness for casting reflection rays can be safely reduced with big performance improvements The Ascent does not use a Hybrid approach, but it can easily be configured to do so, for a massive performance boost. In practice, games like Control, Metro Exodus EE, and Cyberpunk 2077 has a hybrid solution where some reflections are still handled with SSR where possible. Screen Space reflections are very commonly mixed with Ray Traced reflections where possible in many games that support for Ray Tracing. Findings The Ascent does not blend Ray Traced reflections with SSR where possible The optimizations listed in this post is as relevant on the current version as on the previous one. Unfortunately, the framerate on average for me was identical to that of the previous version.

Notes on August 6th Patchīecause the patch notes mentioned performance improvements with Ray Tracing, I compared the performance with all Ray Tracing features enabled before and after the patch was applied. Of course, this might change in the future, but for now I've been investigating if this can be improved upon from the end-users perspective - and it certainly can. However, in its current state, enabling Ray Traced reflections will severely affect performance, even on the strongest of GPUs. The Ascent is a beautiful game, with or without Ray Tracing.
